Child Adolescent Family Therapy

Systemic Family Therapy

Family Therapy is a wonderful treatment modality for families who are experiencing ongoing difficulties in relationships between parents and children, between siblings, and/or between members of blended families that can occur after adoption, divorce or remarriage. It is common for one member of a family system to act out the dysfunction present in the larger family or display feelings and behaviours that the rest of the family is unable or unwilling to express.

I use Systemic Family Therapy to help the family understand the entire system of relating and not scapegoat any one family member. After engaging in Family Therapy, families often have a deeper appreciation for the roles they all play in the larger system they live in and are better able to understand how and why each family member chooses to act in the way they do.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Anxiety in Children and Adolescents

Anxiety disorders often cause children to feel distressed, uneasy, even frightened for no apparent reason. Some common anxiety disorders are panic disorders characterized by episodes of intense fear that occur without warning or provocation. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, which are compulsive, repeated behaviours or thoughts that seem like they are impossible to stop.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a scientifically proven method of treatment that works for children and adolescents as effectively as it does for adults in the treatment of the anxiety disorders as well as such disorders as conduct disorder, depression, and physical complaints that are not caused by an actual physical condition.

Cognitive therapy is most often used in conjunction with behavioural therapy when used with children and aims to break the circle of emotion – thought – behaviour that is causing the distress for the child and changing the thought into a more realistic and helpful one thus breaking the circle. I will work with your child or teenager to support them through the CBT process while at the same time building their self-esteem and self-confidence.
